Sensory-Accessible Concert: Violinist Gina Burgess + Pianist Jennifer King

October 1, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

FREE and designed to make classical music accessible to autistic, neurodivergent, and intellectually disabled community members and seniors.

This spirited Sensory-Accessible Concerts season-opening performance radiates with vibrant energy and global rhythms. Our host, pianist Jennifer King, welcomes multi-genre violinist and composer Gina Burgess, who is a former member of the Juno-nominated Arctic rock band The Jerry Cans and the winner of four ECMA awards with the hot swing group Gypsophilia. The setlist boasts several of Burgess’ original works, such as the mesmerizing “Anuri,” the genre-bending “Ravens on the Roof,” and the reflective “Frost Forming.” Audience members will delight in the “Rumanian Trio,” and the jazzy string swing of Gypsophilia’s “Right in the Inbetween,” and will be treated to a unique JS Bach-Klezmer mash-up to round out the performance. Joining the duo on stage is special guest musician Adam Fine, a former member of Gypsophilia and a member of the Jewish and klezmer music ensemble Der Heisser. Co-presented with the Halifax Central Library, this concert is presented free-of-charge to the public.

About the Series:

Sensory-Accessible Concerts are designed to make classical music accessible to everyone, including autistic, neurodivergent, and intellectually disabled community members of all ages and their families, as well as seniors with age-related changes in hearing and vision that can make loud noises and bright lights uncomfortable, or for anyone with underlying conditions that can affect their sensory processing and make traditional concert environments challenging. These concerts are designed to be inclusive, accommodating, and enjoyable for everyone in a welcoming and friendly environment. They are open to the public free of charge on select Sunday afternoons at the Halifax Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall. Seating is limited, and registration is required.

About the Artists:

Internationally recognized artist Gina Burgess is a multi-genre violinist, composer, yoga instructor, educator, and musician wellness facilitator. A former member of the Juno-nominated Iqaluit-based arctic rock band “The Jerry Cans,” a four-time ECMA award winner with the Hot Swing group “Gypsophilia,” and collaborator with numerous ensembles, Burgess is a sought-after performer.

Like most post-modern musicians, Adam Fine enjoys playing in all traditions, drawing out the best materials from each to add to his bag of tricks. As such, Fine regularly works with dynamic improviser Jeff Torbert, klezmer band Der Heisser and singer-songwriter Norma MacDonald, in addition to his dynamic and inventive bass work with Gypsophilia.

Energetic and insightful, Jennifer King is a versatile, award-winning pianist who is equally at home as a soloist or a collaborator on the concert stage. With a career spanning almost three decades, she has established herself as a sought-after performer and recording artist in the region. She performs with many respected soloists and multidisciplinary artists throughout the Maritimes.
